How a Tooth is Crowned
Dental crowns take two appointments, which are usually approximately two weeks apart.
The First Appointment
When you come to Value Smiles, one of our highly qualified dentists will take an impression of your tooth and then prepare the tooth for crowning. Preparing the tooth consists of removing a small amount of enamel to give the tooth the shape and surface texture that will provide a good base for the dental crown.
This procedure should cause you no discomfort, as we have a no-pain policy and always wait for anesthetics to take effect before treating your affected tooth. Even if you have been experiencing a painful toothache, you will feel nothing during the procedure.
Once the tooth has been treated, we will take another dental impression. Together, the impressions will be used by our dental laboratory to construct a dental crown that looks and fits as naturally as your original tooth. Your crown may be made of durable dental porcelain, metal, a combination of the two (porcelain-fused-to-metal), or zirconia.
Because it takes some time to create a dental crown, we will fit you will a temporary crown before your appointment is done. This crown may look and feel quite sturdy, but it is not made for long-term use, and it cannot handle the full range of biting and chewing you are used to. For this reason, we advise our patients to be gentle with their temporary crowns and avoid any foods that are too hard or sticky. (If the temporary crown comes loose, call our office and we will advise you of the best way to handle the situation.)
The Second Appointment
After your permanent crown is ready, we will call you in for a second appointment to remove the temporary crown and permanently affix your custom made dental crown. Your new tooth will look natural and feel very much like your original tooth, only it will be more resistant to decay and staining and will not cause you any further discomfort.
Caring for Your Crown
The basic lifespan for a crown is considered to be about five years, but they often last much longer with proper care and maintenance. The following steps will help you get the maximum use out of your crown:
- Be vigilant in your daily brushing and flossing routine
- Visit Value Smiles for dental appointments every six months
- Exercise caution when biting and chewing hard foods
When properly placed and maintained, crowns have been known to last up to 15 years or more. There’s no reason why you can’t get the maximum benefit from your investment in a dental crown if you take good care of it.
